Accent Wall: DIY ROOM MAKEOVER UNDER $100

If you have been following me on Instagram, you know my husband recently completed a DIY accent wall project for one of our rooms. This summer, we’ve been working on finishing up some of our home projects since its the perfect time during this quarantine.

Below is our Accent Wall.  We are yet to finish the decoration of this room, so I will share a complete picture of the decorated room in a future post.

TIP: It’s better to have the exact wall measurement and the design beforehand to avoid any surprises at the end of the project. I have a reference of my personal wall measurements at the bottom of the page.

Materials for DIY Accent Wall:

You can also rent the materials from Home Depot, if you do not want to buy it.

Instructions:

  1. Take accurate measurements of your Wall.
  2. Prepare the design and the drawing beforehand. There are so many designs available on Pinterest. I have a FREE Measurement Guide for the Design and Measurement of my wall at the bottom of the page for reference. If you are interested in this exact design and the measurements, download it at the bottom of the page.
  3. Calculate the amount of wood needed as per your design and the size of your wall. and purchase material. Get a few extra wood strips, so if you have to make any modifications, you won’t fall short of the strips.
  4. Make sure your wall is smooth, otherwise, get sandpaper to sand the wall.
  5. Measure Twice!  Use the measuring tape to measure your exact length of plywood strips needed.
  6. Cut the wood strips to exact size measurement with your electric saw. Cut as you progress, instead of cutting it all at once. You will mostly need to make minor adjustments as you progress.
  7. Use Brad Nailer to attach the strips.  **Make sure that your starter piece is level!**  Start putting the wood on the wall, by installing the corners first.
  8. After you are done attaching the wood, start painting the wall with your desired color. I have used the Sherwin Williams Paint in the shade NAVAL.

Tips for a Perfect Accent Wall:

  • Get an electric handheld saw, instead of a manual hand saw.
  • If you want to save the hassle of painting near the edges, pre-paint the wooden strips, at least the corner ones.
  • Brad Nail Gun is a must. It will make the job so much easier.
  • Make the drawing beforehand on an app or a piece of paper with the exact measurements but be ready to adjust as you progress in the project. Sketch-up is a good tool if you want to do it on the computer, instead of the paper.
  • Make sure you get good quality wooden strips that are free of any dents and have a smooth surface. Trust me it’s okay to spend a dollar on more to get the professional-looking accent wall.

That wall is genius! I am painting over a faux brick wall with a fireplace and an adjacent wall with dark wood paneling. I’m thinking two walls right next to each other are difficult to address. It’s a 16×20 foot room with a door in the 20 ft wall with the paneling. This is a 1946 built home. If I remove the covering the walls will require a contractor to repair. What to do??? On a budget.

I had a blast completing this DIY Room Makeover For $100! I love the feeling of taking a space and transforming it on a budget. It was surprisingly easy to accomplish, and I’m so proud of the results. I started by brainstorming ways to make my room look more stylish without spending a lot of money. I decided to start with the walls and picked up some paint and brushes from the store. I spent a few hours painting the walls to get an entirely new look. After that, I searched for simple and inexpensive ways to add texture, such as plants, rugs, and pillows. I was able to find these items at a local thrift store, and I was so pleased with the outcome.
