It is officially fall now and I thought what would be a better way to start the new season than talking about the fall basics you should have in your wardrobe.
Today I will be sharing 10 key items you should have in your fall wardrobe. These are not trend-driven items but are classic pieces that you will wear for years to come. These are everyday basic wear items, that I tend to wear for running errands, layering with other pieces, working from home, or even for styling with other dressier items in my closet.
FALL BASICS #1: BLACK JEANS
Black jeans are a must for me when it comes to fall and winter. You can style them so many different ways with basic or dressy items in your closet. It comes in handy even for workwear. You simply cannot go wrong with black jeans.
I love straight-leg jeans compared to skinny jeans. They are comfortable and easy to style. If you prefer more skinny jeans, I have a few of them linked below.
FALL BASICS #2: LEATHER TROUSERS
I know a lot of you are not a fan of leather, but I feel like, that is because you haven’t found that perfect leather trousers or legging that fits your style. I am not a fan of leather leggings if I am being honest since for me they are a bit uncomfortable. But, when it comes to leather trousers I am all about them. They are super flattering and can easily be dressed up with a pair of boots or dressed down with some sneakers.
I recently did a Reel on my Instagram sharing two ways, I style leather leggings from day tonight. Check it out here. A good quality leather trouser is worth a splurge. You will see the difference in the quality and the way it sits on your body. So do yourself a favor and invest in good quality leather trousers that will last you for years.
Last year I got these leather trousers from Aritzia in brown and this year I am going to invest in black ones. I have worn it a million times already so the cost per wear is well achieved. I love to pair leather trousers with bodysuits, shirts, sweaters, oversized shirts layered with sweaters, etc. There are so many ways you can style leather trousers. You need it in your wardrobe.
FALL BASICS #3: WHITE SHIRT
A white shirt is a basic wardrobe essential for every season in my opinion, but it is for sure an essential even in fall. It can be layered under sweaters and leather trousers, with black jeans and some booties, under blazers, paired with a skirt and booties. Again, there are just a million ways you can style a white shirt.
I like to have a couple of different styles of white shirts in my closet. But the two styles I believe you should definitely have are an oversized and regular fit. I have linked my favorite ones below.
FALL BASICS #4: BLAZERS
I love styling blazers for my go-to fall look. Blazers keep you warm and are perfect for a casual look or a dressy look. You can style blazers with the rest of the items I have mentioned on this list in multiple different ways.
The kind of blazers you should first start with are plaid blazer, black blazer, brown/beige blazer. Once you have these basic ones in your wardrobe, you can buy other styles for sure. I like the fit of my blazer to be a bit oversized and give it that undone effortless look.
FALL BASICS #5: BASIC KNIT SWEATER
A fall basic wardrobe, will not be complete without a basic knit sweater. Basic knits are perfect to lounge around in, layering, and even for workwear. I would suggest investing in good-quality basic knits in neutral colors first before you go ahead and add some colorful knits to your wardrobe. Invest in colors like camel, black, beige, brown, white, grey, navy since you can wear these in multiple different ways with the rest of the items in your wardrobe for years to come.
I have linked some cashmere basic sweaters as well as affordable ones below. When it comes to basic pieces that I know I am going to wear for years to come, I prefer splurging and investing in a good cashmere sweater, which is really well made.
FALL BASICS #6: LEATHER JACKET
The leather jacket is another wardrobe basic that you can style year-round. You can pair a black leather jacket with dresses, skirts and a t-shirt with boots, jeans, and a t-shirt. There are a lot of styles available but my favorite is the biker style. I have linked my favorite ones below.
FALL BASICS #7: BODYSUITS
Bodysuits for me are a perfect in between a basic T-shirt and a dressy top. I love to wear bodysuits where I want to look put together but do not want to look dressed up or super casual. I love pairing bodysuits with leather leggings and a trench coat, with jeans and a leather jacket, with joggers for work from home/running errands outfits, with skirts, with trousers for work, etc. Any outfit where I don’t want that bulkiness of a t-shirt, I will wear a bodysuit.
FALL BASICS #8: SATIN SKIRT/ DRESS
You may not have expected to see anything dressy on this list, but I wanted to give you one option for a dressy look. A satin skirt or dress can be styled with a sweater on top with boots, with a shirt, or a basic tee with some sneakers or booties and it will give you a perfect dinner or day out look. For me, a good quality satin dress in black or beige is a must. It is a fall basic for sure. On the days, when I am too lazy to style an outfit for a chic dinner look, I put on a basic satin dress or a skirt and style it with a slouchy or fitted knit, and I instantly feel ready.
FALL BASICS #9: TRENCH COAT
A trench coat is just such a classic wardrobe staple. It is so timeless and effortlessly chic. A trench coat will look perfectly styled with any of the other items mentioned on this list as well. I love pairing a trench coat with black jeans and a basic knit with some knee-high boots for an effortless outfit.
FALL BASICS #10: LONG CARDIGAN
A long cardigan can be styled in so many ways and is a perfect addition to your fall wardrobe. I prefer long cardigans compared to shorter ones because, for me, it makes an outfit look more polished and chic. I love pairing long cardigans with ankle boots, with heels, or even with sneakers for a perfect airport outfit. Long cardigans with buttons in the middle can also be worn as a dress with knee-high boots, which looks so effortlessly chic.
So there you have it. My must-have fall basics will last you for years to come.
You may have noticed, I did not list any must-have shoe options for fall, that’s because I have done this entire post on it here.
